Puffin Merchandise

Atlantic puffins (often called "sea parrots") are members of the auk family; they are not penguins.  They live off the rocky northern coastlines of North America and Europe, weigh about a pound, and stand about a foot tall.  In the USA, Atlantic puffins can be seen only off the coast of northeastern Maine, principally on Machias Seal Island.  Puffins can be seen in Atlantic Canada, as well, and are the provincial bird of Newfoundland.  The three other species of puffins, horned puffins, tufted puffins, and the Rhinoceros Auklet, are found in the northern Pacific, from Alaska to northern California.

Puffins spend their lives at sea, but return to breed each spring to the place where they were born.  Young puffins return to the breeding colony, but mature, mated pairs return to the exact burrow they used the year before.  Their single egg is laid in burrows or in rock crevices where they faithfully tend their young until late July-early August, when the plump chicks are ready to care for themselves.  By mid-August, the Puffins have gone to sea, and do not return again until late March-early April.

As the brightly-colored puffins are birds, we could have listed our puffin merchandise under the bird themes category.  But puffins are special birds, and as we have highlighted them in the name of our store, so we highlight them on our web site.  We want to be the store you go to for Puffin merchandise.  We have a variety of other small puffin items (e.g., key chains, postcards, magnets, plush toys, tacs/pins, souvenir spoons) in addition to the puffin merchandise we have shown on this web site.  If you have an interest in other puffin items, please drop us a line.

Audubon Singing Puffins

Puffins nest on islands off our coast from April to the end of August.  These birds, designed in conjunction with the Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, sing their own call.   The puffin is 6" high.  $17.00.

Balsam Pillows (Maine-made)

These balsam pillows give off a long-lasting fragrance.  They often are used in drawers and closets, under furniture, in automobiles, and on windowsills.  Balsam also is used to clear congestion, head colds, and asthma; in baths to relieve sore muscles and backaches; and has been used in the past as a remedy for rheumatism, kidney conditions, bladder inflammation, and urinary difficulties.  Traditionally given as a sign of friendship, balsam products make wonderful gifts.  One 8" x 6" pillow $25.00; One 7" x 5" pillow $20.00 (Two for $35)

These 100% combed cotton boxers have a one-button fly in front and the dyed Stud Puffin design in back.  The print is permanently dyed into the fabric; it will not fade or run.  Sizes S (28-30), M (32-34), L (36-38) and XL (40-42).  $22.00 each.

Shown above, with the puffin etched and painted, are a money clip and cufflinks, on the left, and a tie tac and a tie bar, on the right.  These pieces are handcrafted in the USA by Fairhaven Designs, whose artists use fossilized tusks from the North American mastodon.  Each piece comes in a small, white jewelry box.  Prices are as follows:

Cuff Links $40.00   (The cuff links are oval shaped.)

Money Clip $30.00   (The scrimshaw in the money clip is oval shaped.)

Tie Bar or Tie Tac $30.00   (The scrimshaw in the tie bar is oval.  The scrimshaw in the tie tac can be in a hexagon or a circle.  If you do not say otherwise, we will send you a circle shaped tie tac.)

Socks

Blue Puffin, White Puffin, and White Lone Puffin Patterns

These thick acrylic-nylon socks, for sizes 9-11, give excellent warmth.  They are excellent for wearing around the house or in a pair of boots outside.  The "Lone Puffin" sock just covers the ankle; the others extend a few inches above the ankle.  Please specify the style you want.  One pair $13.00; two pairs $20.00  (Effective 11/30/05, the adult White Puffin socks above are temporarily not available.)

Child's socks are available in the White Puffin style in sizes 6-8 (for ages 2-4) and 7-9 (for ages 4-8).  Two pair for $18.00
