Maine Moose. Henry David Thoreau called them "God’s horses." One of the first acts by the first Maine legislature in 1820 was to put a moose on the Maine State seal. In 1979, the Legislature named the moose as Maine’s State animal. With its thick-set body, short neck, inordinately long legs and head, and its massive antlers, the moose is a spectacular sight. No animal is more symbolic of Maine’s forests than is the moose.
Maine has an estimated 30,000 moose, more than any other state except Alaska. Moose are the largest mammals in North America and the largest members of the deer family in the world. Bull moose weigh between 1,000 and 1,500 pounds; they can stand over 7 feet tall at the shoulder and 10 feet long. Even cows can weigh up to half a ton. Bull moose antlers can spread up to 6 feet wide and weigh hundreds of pounds.
Although more prevalent in northern and central Maine, moose live throughout the state. In fact, moose have been observed in the parking lot at The Puffin Pines. Moose-watching, observing moose in their natural habitat, is a popular activity requiring no special equipment; binoculars and/or a camera is all you’ll need. Usually the best periods to see moose are (a) late spring-mid summer, when moose are often in shallow ponds and around roads replenishing their sodium that was depleted during the winter, and (b) late August-mid September, when cows and calves particularly can be found around ponds.
When you drive through Washington County and see a moose, what will you do? Stop and look, of course. We also hope you "stop and look" at the Maine Moose Merchandise here on The Puffin Pines web site. In this virtual world, get as close to moose as you wish. But hundreds of moose and several people are killed each year in Maine in moose/vehicle accidents. So, please be alert while driving in moose country. In the real world, if a moose fills your windshield or your camera lens, you’re too close.
In addition to the Maine Moose Merchandise we have on our web site, we have a variety of other smaller items (e.g., key chains, magnets, post cards, tacs/pins, souvenir spoons) in our store in Whiting. If you have an interest in other Maine Moose Merchandise, please drop us a line.
