Minnetonka Leathers
Minnetonka Moccasin uses several different leathers to make its moccasins. The most commonly used leather is cowhide. Minnetonka's cowhide is all full grain leather and has been treated with various tanning processes. The most common characteristic of suede is the exposed leather fibers known as the nap. Minnetonka's suede is expertly tanned; special care is taken to sand and buff the surface to create a fine luxurious nap. Minnetonka helped pioneer the brown ruff and tan ruff leather. In this process, the leather is treated by impregnating the surface with oils in which the nap of the leather is held down. The result is a rough distressed looking finish.
Moosehide has a soft, buttery feel. Scars and scratches on the leather are natural characteristics of the wild moose and enhance its natural beauty. Deerskin leather also is known for its softness and comfort. Because deer come from the wild also, scars and scratches are a natural characteristic of this hide. Sheepskin is a unique natural product. The hairs are hollow so that the fur portion of the hide wicks away excess moisture from the skin and allows the skin to breathe.
