Maine is a haven for birds and bird watching. Washington County lies along the Atlantic Flyway, a migratory route that follows the eastern coast of North America. Bird life here is as diverse and exciting as can be found anywhere -- from birds of field, brush, forest, and marsh to oceanic and sub-arctic birds. Roughly half of all North American bird species can be found in Washington County sometime each year, particularly in one of the County's two National Wildlife Refuges. An extremely brief list of birds found here include chickadees - Maine's state bird, ducks, eiders, finches, gannets, grouse, gulls, hawks, loons, mergansers, mockingbirds, nuthatches, orioles, osprey, owls, petrels, plovers, puffins, robins, sandpipers, sparrows, swallows, teals, terns, thrushes, warblers, woodcocks, woodpeckers, wrens, and the American bald eagle.

Each of these birds is resident in Washington County during part or all of the year. The Black-capped Chickadee is Maine's official state bird. Bald Eagles frequently can be seen throughout our area. Atlantic Puffins nest on islands off our coast from April to the end of August. The Common Loon is here year-round. We have several sparrows, woodpeckers, owls, and ducks, including the species above.
These birds, designed in conjunction with the Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, sing their own real bird calls. Each bird is roughly 5-7" high. Each bird is $17.00.
Balsam Pillows (Maine-made)
These balsam pillows give off a long-lasting fragrance. They often are used in drawers and closets, under furniture, in automobiles, and on windowsills. Balsam also is used to clear congestion, head colds, and asthma; in baths to relieve sore muscles and backaches; and has been used in the past as a remedy for rheumatism, kidney conditions, bladder inflammation, and urinary difficulties. Traditionally given as a sign of friendship, balsam products make wonderful gifts.

Buoys (Maine-made)
Two kinds of buoys are available: foam and wooden. Most will have a handle on the bottom. Each buoy is 17-18" tall, including handle. In addition, each will have a cord at the top so it can be hung. Buoys without handles can be set upright. Foam buoys weigh less than a pound. Wooden buoys weigh 4-5 pounds each. Please click on Hanging Things for examples and prices.

Slates (Maine-made)
These are hand-painted, old slate, roof shingles quarried in the Monson- Brownville area northwest of Bangor. The slate was used as, or as part of, a roof shingle in the 1800s. These slate shingles are not being made any more.
